CAREER

Steve Harvey is a dedicated, trusted, and accomplished counselor, litigator, and trial attorney with a practice that focuses on seeking justice for clients through the court system. For 30 years, Steve has represented people, families, companies, and nonprofits in important cases involving contracts and commercial litigation; fraud, defamation, and other torts; intellectual property; employment; the environment; fiduciary duties; insurance; financial services, and numerous state and federal statutes.

Steve has litigated numerous cases that gained national media attention due to their lasting impact. His groundbreaking work includes a federal case that upheld the teaching of evolution in public school science class; a case that saved the life of a child and led to permanent changes in organ transplant policy for pediatric patients; a case that confirmed the safety and efficacy of the influenza virus vaccine; and cases involving important environmental matters including climate change and groundwater contamination.

Prior to founding his firm, Steve practiced for 20 years, first at Crowell & Moring LLP and then as a partner at Pepper Hamilton LLP. He gained significant experience representing clients in commercial litigation matters in multiple industries, such as banking and finance, insurance, and pharmaceuticals, and he served as lead counsel in numerous trials, appeals, class actions, arbitrations, and injunction actions. He also represented numerous plaintiffs in civil rights cases.

Before that, Steve worked as a trial attorney for the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, handling the most important civil litigation matters for the federal government. Steve represented the Executive Office of the President, the Departments of Defense, Agriculture, and Health and Human Services, the FBI, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, among other federal agencies.

At the start of his career, Steve served as a law clerk to the late Judge Myron H. Bright of the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. He graduated magna cum laude from Villanova University School of Law in 1989, where he served as managing editor of the Villanova Law Review.

Steve maintains an active pro bono practice and supports his colleagues’ pro bono and public service activities. He serves and has served in leadership positions in the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and the Philadelphia Bar Association. He is a master in the Temple American Inn of Court. He serves on the board and is past president of the Homeless Advocacy Project. He is the founder and president of A Call to the Bar: Lawyers for Common Sense on Climate Change. He has submitted numerous amicus curiae “friend of the court” briefs in state and federal courts in support of civil and environmental justice. He is frequently invited to speak about his cases, and he writes on and teaches multiple legal topics, including evidence, trial advocacy, experts, and science and the law.
